Matt Goerzen is a PhD student studying the History of Science at Harvard University.
He is interested in the history of computer security, with an emphasis on the ways hackers and other outsiders have influenced security policy and practices. His dissertation will explore the historical development of “vulnerabilities”—as both epistemological and practical objects of attention—in computational processes. Before pursuing his PhD, he worked as an artist and researcher, documenting hidden affordances and novel types of vulnerability in emerging sociotechnical systems. As a Berkman Klein Center fellow, he aims to produce a series of oral histories.
