The Public is Getting Fed Up With Data Centers. Politicians Need to Take Notice

Faculty Associate Ben Green tracks growing public discontent with the data centers fueling US AI companies. Data Centers, Green notes, lead to higher energy costs for consumers, impose substantial environmental costs, and fail to bring stable, high-paying jobs - which may offset some of these harms - to the communities they impact, arguing that politicians looking ahead to 2028 need to take seriously the public's concerns about data centers. "Democrats should take note: challenging data centers is not just the right policy move on its merits—it is also a position that will set them up for electoral success," Green writes in Tech Policy Press
