OpenAI has shown it cannot be trusted. Canada needs nationalized, public AI.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, lobbied Ottawa for business. All the while it hid its knowledge of Tumbler Ridge shooter.

BKC Affiliates Nathan Sanders and Bruce Schneier highlight the hypocrisy of OpenAI's "OpenAI for Countries" initiative, noting the company's unwillingness to respond appropriately to the Tumbler Ridge, B.C. shooter's ChatGPT interactions.  Their answer? "The only real alternative [to for-profit AI giants] is to be bold and invest in a wholly Canadian public AI: an AI model built and funded by Canada for Canadians, as public infrastructure." In The Globe and Mail, Sanders and Schneier highlight Swiss public AI model Apertus as an exemplar of alternative modes of AI ownership.
