How a Law That Shields Big Tech Is Now Being Used Against It

A Massachusetts professor has filed a lawsuit against Meta using a novel interpretation of Section 230, a law known primarily for shielding social media companies from liability.

The New York Times chronicles the latest in Ethan Zuckerman’s lawsuit against Meta. Utilizing an undercited part of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, Zuckerman “is asking the court to pre-emptively protect an effort to build software that filters content because an internet user simply does not want to see it,” allowing him to “release software that lets users automatically unfollow everyone on Facebook.”
