Would You Marry Superintelligence?

“Law should carve out targeted rights and protections for pressing needs arising from intimate human-AI relationships.” BKC 2026 Fellow Inyoung Cheong examines whether future superintelligent AI companions should be granted the legal status of marriage. While acknowledging that human-AI relationships may warrant protections around privacy, medical decision making, and caregiving, Cheong argues that marriage should remain a uniquely human institution because it creates networks of mutual obligation, kinship, and social responsibility that AI relationships cannot replicate.
