Faculty Associate Yong Jin Park illuminates the ethical challenges wrought by VR-based social media, including users' autonomy over their digital representations. In a paper published in Ethics and Information Technology, Park argues that GDPR standards are inadequate for regulating VR as the technology blurs the line between the real and the digital. "The fundamental regulatory effort, as this study argues, must be on how to transform ‘one-way’ monopolistic algorithmic dictation into, ‘two-way’ bidirectional construction of users as active participants, whose represented identities can be negotiable and open to alternative interpretations."
