Faculty Associates Woody Hartzog and Jessica Silbey argue in a paper forthcoming in the UC Law Journal that AI diminishes institutional transparency, cooperation, and accountability. Hartzog and Silbey focus on AI's application to the rule of law, higher education, free press, and civic life, suggesting that AI is tailored to erode the core features of these democratic institutions, effectively placing them "on death row." The authors close with a warning: "because the ubiquitous and indiscreet deployment of AI is anathema to the well-being of our necessary and revered institutions, without rules to mitigate AI’s cancerous spread, the only remaining roads lead to institutional dissolution."
