“Solving the content moderation puzzle is one of the great challenges of the information age and platforms are the laboratories of online governance in which this challenge is playing out. The FOB is an ambitious experiment in one of these laboratories that should neither be hailed as a comprehensive fix nor dismissed as an inconsequential façade,” douek wrote. “What exactly it is, and what kind of institution the newly appointed board members make of it, is still an open question. It may be a Supreme Court yet—or a local court, Potemkin court, or ad hoc consultant. The new board members have their work cut out for them if the FOB’s oversight is to be meaningful, but there is no reason not to wish them every success.”
