Tomo is a Learning Scientist and Human-Computer Interaction researcher who works closely with education stakeholders to support human learning using advanced technologies in STEM.
His research aims to understand and effectively support meaningful human learning by designing advanced, AI-based learning technologies with education stakeholders, such as teachers, learners, children, parents, and school administrators. He has worked with over 2000 educators and school-aged children in the US, Europe, and East Asia to (co-)design a wide range of adaptive learning technologies and to conduct school-based research. He is also an advocate for the open education movement. At Creative Commons Japan and the Open Education Group, he has worked with policy researchers, educators, and learners to identify needs and challenges that exist in openly sharing educational materials and to design practical solutions that help educators and learners effectively engage in open educational practices. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Technology-Enhanced Learning at Saarland University in Germany where he leads the "Learning to Adapt, Learning with Agency" Lab. He has been a Faculty Associate at BKC since 2022. Prior to that, he completed his Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University. He also holds M.S. in Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon and M.A. in Learning, Design, and Technology at Stanford Graduate School of Education.
