Jim Cowie is a serial entrepreneur and data scientist, with experience as a data storyteller in both the Internet measurement and financial industries. He holds a B.S in computer science from Yale University. After an early career in DARPA-sponsored high performance computing, Jim founded Renesys, the Internet Intelligence Authority, which merged with Dyn before ultimately becoming Oracle Internet Intelligence in 2016. Jim subsequently found a change of pace as a founder at DeepMacro, supporting eight years of factor-based macroeconomic research and developing automated investment strategies based on alternative data and machine learning.

In more recent years, Jim has helped research teams at the Internet Society and RIPE NCC tell more engaging data-driven stories. In 2024 he founded the Internet History Initiative, an effort to preserve and curate the historical datasets that document the Internet's regional evolution, making their stories accessible to future historians and other audiences beyond the Internet's traditional technical core community. He'll be pursuing this work as a dual fellow of the Berkman Klein Center and the Harvard Law School's Library Innovation Lab.
