We Should Separate Memorization from Copyright

Faculty Associate Niva Elkin-Koren and coauthors argue against the conflation of memorization and copying, so a model's memorizing another doesn't necessarily indicate copyright infringement. Moreover, copyright infringement does not require memorization. In a manuscript published on arXiv, the authors steer researchers toward a more nuanced view of the relationship between copying and copyright.
