Faculty Associate Niva Elkin-Koren and coauthors introduce transparency-by-inquiry (TbI) as an alternative to the transparency-by-disclosure (TbD) model they see in legislation like the GDPR. While TbD reproduces the very transparency it seeks to eliminate, TbI provides "a distributed practice of multiple stakeholders developing testable inquiries about AI systems, guided by their own interests and values and operationalized by their own tools."
