Distinguishing Task-Specific and General-Purpose AI in Regulation

Faculty Associates Andrew Selbst and Solon Barocas and coauthors identify ways that general-purpose AI requires regulatory tools not necessitated by task-specific AI. They identify four meaningful differences between task-specific AI and GPAI: the latter are difficult to regulate because of their adaptability, their lack of task specificity, their exposing new legal concerns, and their complicated value chain.
