Distinguishing Task-Specific and General-Purpose AI in Regulation

Faculty Associates Andrew Selbst and Solon Barocas and coauthors identify ways that general-purpose AI requires regulatory tools not necessitated by task-specific AI. They identify four meaningful differences between task-specific AI and GPAI: the latter are difficult to regulate because of their adaptability, their lack of task specificity, their exposing new legal concerns, and their complicated value chain. Accordingly, GPAI calls for new regulatory approaches, including a shift toward tech-neutral regulation. Read more from arXiv.
