AI as commons

Why we need community-controlled Artificial Intelligence

Faculty Associate Vasilis Kostakis and coauthor Aristotle Tympas make the case for community-controlled AI, systems not concentrated in the hands of a few tech giants. The authors identify four foundational principles of democratically-run AI, and suggest that democratizing AI "means nurturing grassroots movements, communities, and networks willing to experiment with and contribute to commons-based AI configurations, both locally and globally. It also means exercising pressure on regional, national, and transnational bodies of governance to introduce favourable legislation and provide adequate resources."
