Scientists Need a Positive Vision for AI

It’s time to lead reform, block harm, and advance the public good

Affiliates Bruce Schneier and Nathan Sanders offer an optimistic outlook: AI-generated harms are neither natural nor inevitable, and beneficial uses of the technology are possible. The duo cautions against resignation on the part of those with the power to change AI's trajectory, pointing to positive outcomes the technology has had to date: "There are myriad ways to leverage and reshape AI to improve peoples’ lives, distribute rather than concentrate power, and even strengthen democratic processes. Many examples have arisen from the scientific community and deserve to be celebrated." To read more, including about specific cases of beneficial AI, visit IEEE Spectrum.
