Digital Racist Speech in Latin America: Narratives and Counter-Narratives

The Berkman Center for Internet & Society and the Instituto Mídia Étnica (Ethnic Media Institute) will host a conference, with the support of Ford Foundation Brazil and ITS Rio, on digital racist speech to explore the dynamics of hate speech targeted toward Afro-descendent populations in Latin America and the existing counter approaches from civilian initiatives, as well as the public and private sector and map key actors, leveraging the various human networks already in place and connecting the relevant Afro-descendent communities of knowledge and practice.
Bringing together 100-120 academics, practitioners, young people, activists, philanthropists, government officials, and representatives of technology companies in Latin America, this highly participatory and interactive event will discuss narratives of racist speech patterns in Latin America with a focus on Brazil and Colombia, and how they are being replaced by the positive approach of initiatives of dedicated Afro-descendant youth civic engagement and leadership forging in the process new and meaningful political identities.
This event is part of the Harmful Speech Online initiative of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society that evaluates the impact of hate speech online and its capacity to catalyze violence and social exclusion. More information can be found on the Harmful Speech Online project page.

O Centro Berkman para Internet e Sociedade e o Instituto Mídia Étnica irão sediar uma conferência, com o apoio da Fundação Ford Brasil, e o ITS Rio, sobre o discurso racista na Internet. O evento tem com objetivo entender a dinâmica de discurso de ódio direcionados para populações Afrodescendentes na América Latina e a contra-narrativa criada por iniciativas da sociedade civil, bem como o setor público e privado, além de mapear os principais atores, aproveitando as várias redes já existentes para conectar as comunidades Afrodescendentes relevantes nesse debate em termos teóricos e prático.
Reunindo 100-120 acadêmicos, profissionais, jovens, ativistas, filantropos, representantes governamentais e de empresas de tecnologia na América Latina, este evento, altamente participativo e interativa, irá discutir os padrões de narrativas das falas racistas na América Latina com foco no Brasil e Colômbia. Além disso, visa entender como esse padrão de discurso está sendo substituído por uma abordagem positiva nas iniciativas da juventude por meio engajamento cívico Afrodescendente e de suas liderança forja no processo de construção de novas e significativas identidades políticas.
