Hiring: Writer and Digital Content Manager

The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University seeks an energetic and astute Writer and Digital Content Manager to play a crucial role in supporting the Center’s relationships with a broad range of audiences – with a focus on writing and editing compelling copy, managing digital and social media content, and facilitating press visibility. This role will report to the Director of Communications and support the Communications team’s tasks of translating and amplifying the work of the Center with the overall goal of raising its profile nationally and internationally and advancing its public interest mission.

As a Writer and Digital Content Manager you will:

  • Write dynamic, concise content including website copy, the weekly newsletter, blog posts on community members’ work, social media content, Center news announcements, and related email campaigns. 

  • Write engaging news stories on Center research and programs, collaborating with Visual Communications Manager and Events Manager to spot opportunities for onsite interviews and event coverage. 

  • Manage the Berkman Klein Center’s social media strategy and social accounts including Twitter and Facebook, generating original daily content that deepens engagement with key audiences. Monitor, analyze, and report weekly social media analytics to Director. 

  • Manage team editorial calendar in Asana and Outlook, ensuring appropriate delegation flows between the Communications team and internal collaborators.

  • Work with the Director of Communications to build a unique messaging framework and socialize internal publications standards to ensure consistent application of language for marketing materials and other stakeholder outreach. 

  • Quickly field inbound inquiries from journalists and connect them with appropriate experts in the Berkman Klein Center community, escalating requests to Director as needed. Draft press releases and pitches, build and maintain a press list and a BKC community expert directory for topical press requests, and track news coverage and press mentions for social media amplification and impact reporting. 

  • Work with Berkman Klein Center project teams and community scholars to assess copy and asset needs for digital content around events, announcements, and launches. Build pipeline and related approval flows in Asana to deliver copy and assets, consult with projects about the potential for amplifying their work by identifying newsworthy content, ensuring representation on Berkman Klein Center social channels to promote initiatives, and manage research submissions to open access outlets. 

  • Collaborate and liaise with individuals across the Center and the University and engage Berkman Klein Center’s diverse community to ensure completion of communications goals including elevating new voices and underrepresented communities of practice.

  • Provide support with website content management and maintenance in Drupal CMS.

  • Lead asset and copy collection for institutional writing projects such as annual reports and funders’ updates. 

Basic Qualifications

Five or more years of related professional experience in the communications field and/or in journalism and/or communications writing in a variety of formats for a variety of audiences 

Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for people who have: 

  • Experience managing and producing compelling written and visual content for digital platforms that corresponds in creative and timely ways to the news cycle 

  • Portfolio of concise copy that translates complex ideas for general audiences, especially at the intersection of emerging technology and storytelling, policy, or scholarship 

  • Editorial planning, project management, and virtual interpersonal communication skills; experience with Asana and Slack collaborative environments preferred 

  • Fluency with digital analytics and experience with managing content on a CMS such as Drupal preferred 

  • Ability to independently problem-solve and set deadlines with a large group of scholars, researchers, teachers, and activists in customized ways that grow their storytelling impact  

  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment, ethical standards, discretion, and tact in independent and team environments, both online and offline 

Additional Information

This is a term appointment currently expected to extend through 6/30/23, with potential for renewal subject to funding and departmental need.
