Ana María Castillo is a researcher at the School of Communication Sciences at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) and co-leads Fractal AI Lab , an inter-university initiative based at the University of Chile.
She is a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and an active member of the Hemispheres Initiative , which fosters transatlantic dialogue on technology governance between Latin America and Europe. Her work explores the intersection of technology, media, and democracy, with a focus on human rights, platform regulation, and the political economy of digital infrastructures in Latin America.
She has extensive experience supporting the design and evaluation of public policy, particularly in areas related to youth, education, and emerging technologies. Over the past decade, Ana has contributed to numerous academic and policy initiatives addressing freedom of expression, digital rights, and inclusive communication. She co-authored the report Más amplitud, más voces, más democracia (2023) for the Chilean Ministry General Secretariat of Government, which proposed structural reforms to strengthen media pluralism. She also co-edited the collective volume Mujeres de la Comunicación Chile (FES Comunicación, 2024), available online, highlighting the contributions of women in the field of communication.
Her current research includes a strong focus on the impact of artificial intelligence on creative industries, cultural labor, and new forms of technological agency. Ana holds a PhD in Communication and Journalism, a Master’s in Communication, and a BA in Journalism and Social Communication.
