75% of Seattle Voters Want Cable Open Access
1999-02-08
Over this past weekend our coalition commissioned an opinion survey of King County and
Seattle voters to see how they felt about the question of cable open access. Those results
show that 75% of Seattle and King County voters want cable open access now.
The members of the Seattle City Council and the King County Council need to know that
they will have overwhelming support from voters to require TCI/AT&T to provide cable
open access now. Few public policy issues have a 75% level of support. This one does.
We decided to ask voters how they felt because we know that there are both short-term
and long-term customer objectives that are under consideration by the City of Seattle and
the King County Council. While the customer cable service objectives of building out the
system are important, we are concerned that the true long-term customer value of choosing
your own Internet service provider could be lost in the pursuit of short-term concerns.
