About Katherine

Katherine L. McDaniel is a Knight Fellow with the Information Society  Project at the Yale Law School. She studies intellectual property in international law; the tensions between liberalizing IP law and protecting tradition knowledge; and the digital production, transformation, and distribution of cultural information goods such as music, film, and digital art; and new media, media reform, and participatory culture. McDaniel graduated from the Yale Law School in May 2006. She also holds degrees from the University of Washington in Philosophy and Comparative Intellectual History and has a minor in Mathematics.

About Gene

Gene Koo is a Berkman Fellow researching the impact of technological change on legal education, legal practice, and the bridge between education and practice. He helped found and continues to work for Legal Aid University, which provides training and professional development to poverty lawyers across the nation. Prior to his appointment at the Berkman Center, Gene worked at Mass. Law Reform Institute, where he coordinated a knowledge management website for the state (MassLegalServices.org), helped develop a portal to educate Massachusetts residents on their legal rights (MassLegalHelp.org), and advised on technical and practical implementation of a statewide case management system. He is also involved with efforts across several law schools to use virtual environments for legal instruction (CyberOne, State of Play Academy). Gene graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School in 2002, where he wrote his final paper on the effectiveness of online discussion systems as a complement to traditional law school classes. He graduated from Harvard College magna cum laude in 1997 with a concentration in Social Studies.
