Berkman's hiring: Cyberlaw Clinic Fellow

Berkman's Cyberlaw Clinic is seeking a resident Clinical Fellow for the academic year 2008-09. If you are passionate about working with students and internet/IP law, here is your chance to closely mentor and supervise Harvard Law students as they pursue fascinating, cutting-edge cases in our Clinic. We're especially interested in someone with solid practical experience and strong interests in transactional, licensing and counseling work, including assisting students in reviewing, negotiating and drafting music, software and other licenses and a wide variety of technology, confidentiality and consulting agreements. You also will supervise students as they counsel clients regarding a range of novel copyright, fair use, trademark and other intellectual property issues. In particular, we are looking for a skilled lawyer who is adept at recognizing, serving and teaching the complex interactions between the business, technological and legal aspects of clients' needs in the internet and IP areas.

Be an integral part of Harvard's and the Berkman Center's preeminent Cyberlaw Clinic, through which Harvard Law School students prepare for high-tech practice and earn course credit for working on a variety of transactional/licensing, client counseling, advocacy, litigation, and legislative cases and projects involving novel issues of business and the internet, new technology and intellectual property. You will work in close collaboration with the Cyberlaw Clinic Director, and will meet regularly with students to prepare and strategize for their casework, observe students in client interactions, review students’ written and other work product, provide regular, detailed feedback to students on their projects and performance, and deliver instruction in basic legal skills and internet-related practice. You also will assist the Director in developing new cases and clients, particularly in the transactional, licensing and IP/technology counseling areas, and in maintaining existing relationships with clients and external partners such as government agencies, advocacy organizations and law firms. You also will have the opportunity to use a limited amount of time to pursue your own research or scholarship.

This is a term position ending June 30, 2009 (as with all Center staff); continuation contingent on program needs and resource considerations.

Required Education, Experience and Skills:

Juris Doctor degree with admission to and active status in good standing in at least one state bar and eligibility for admission to the Massachusetts bar. Minimum of 2-5 years legal-practice experience with significant internet and intellectual property law background required, particularly in the areas of transactional and licensing work and copyright, fair use, trademark and other IP counseling and analysis. Previous experience in a clinical legal setting and/or the direct supervision and mentoring of young attorneys or students is strongly preferred. Candidates should be energetic and passionate about working with students and internet/IP law. Top academic credentials, superior writing and verbal skills, sound judgment, exceptional ethical standards, and proven abilities in interpersonal communication, mentoring, supervision and team building/team management required.

While this position is full time, part-time candidates will be considered as well.
