Hong Kong Looks to Protect Copyright in the Digital Age

In the development of a governmental policy to "strengthen copyright protection" in the digital age, the government of Hong Kong recently solicited public views to augment their own work on the issue.

Professor Peter Yu of Michigan State University College of Law and fellow at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (Wuhan, China), in collaboration with the Journalism and Media Studies Centre at the University of Hong Kong, authored a paper that was submitted to the consultation board last week.

The paper points to many options of addressing copyright protection, but advocates for such things as broad fair use policies, 'safe harbour' provisions for education, support of open access, and broadened interoperability.

University of Hong Kong Professor and Berkman Fellow, Rebecca MacKinnon explains the process and significance of the work, which she was involved with and has written about in the past.

Berkman Fellow Doc Searls also blogged his thoughts and opinions on the paper.
