NFL Lifts Objections in Copyright Battle

Months ago, Berkman Fellow Wendy Seltzer began a back-and-forth with the NFL over the fair use of a clip posted to YouTube.  The 33 seconds of Super Bowl footage show the copyright statement of the NFL and the kick-off, stopping before the receiving team's return.

What followed was a prime example of the methods and sometimes over-reaching copyright protection that businesses employ in the digital age.  With YouTube serving as the battleground, the clip was taken down, reposted, taken down again, and most recently reposted with the NFL tapping out.

Although they maintain that the clip violates their copyright, a letter was sent to Wendy notifying her of the formal objection being dropped.

Wendy will be joining us tomorrow for the Berkman Luncheon Series to elaborate on the Viacom v. YouTube battle and the process involved with her own DMCA notices.
