Europe Leans on iTunes for Interop

Apple's open letter to the "big 4" of the music industry (who combined distribute over 70% of music), suggesting that the time has come for the removal of digital rights management (DRM) has peaked the interest of consumers, the business world and governments alike. 

Richard Staeuber, of the University of St. Gallen, spoke with TheStreet.com about some of the measures that have already been taken to force Apple's hand. Staeuber notes that, "Norway's consumer ombudsman said recently that iTunes violates the country's consumer-protection laws and that Apple has until October to open up its music store or end up in court."

He continues, "Meanwhile, consumer organizations in Germany, France and Finland have joined the Norwegian consumer ombudsman in his demand for interoperability."
