Re-blocking and Resistance in China

Wikipedia's most recent unblocking in China may have had a short shelf-life, but Newsweek's International Edition is reporting on the empowerment that online communications have provided to Chinese citizens.  In a piece titled "Spoiling for a Fight," the transformations from citizen-to-activist for individuals like Zeng Jingyan and Nina Wu are detailed, noting the personal affronts that led them from their relatively comfortable lifestyles to their more difficult efforts in organizing and advocacy.

Resistance to the Chinese government's crackdowns on civil rights and freedom of expression, among other things, "...really brings out the reserved strength in people," says Rebecca MacKinnon, Berkman fellow and expert on the Chinese blogosphere.

The piece contends that the "...well-educated activists are methodical, well organized and knowledgeable about their legal rights. They use the government's own rhetoric about creating a fair and lawful society against it when those rights are threatened. And they are claiming victories."  Read more about the internet's influence on those victories here
