Sunlight Foundation Wins the "Best Blog" Title

The 13 person jury compiled by Deutche-Welle, the German broadcasting company, has named the Sunlight Foundation the "Best Blog" in their 2006 International Weblog Awards.

The Sunlight Foundation has harnessed a tremendous amount of energy and information within its blog, using it as a tool to bring together their range of work in exploring Congressional behavior.  In their belief that the "collective power of citizens to demand greater accountability is the clearest route to reform," the Foundation has employed technology via databases, online tutorials and digitization and distribution efforts.  Their hugely comprehensive and collaborative wiki, Congresspedia, housed in conjunction with The Center for Media & Democracy, is one of their many projects working to shine some rays into the depths of Washington.

The panel of independent journalists that made up the 'Best of the Blog' jury, who span from locations across the globe, said that they "admired the Sunlight Foundation's work to increase transparency in government and called the project a positive example of how blogs can shape political discourse. The watchblog was also praised for its potential to be adapted for use in other countries."

Notably, there were over 50% more blogs nominated for awards this year than last.
