Rip. Sample. Mash. Share. The Creative Commons CD.

The Wall Street Journal reported today that a partnership CD between Wired Magazine and Creative Commons featuring the Beastie Boys, David Byrne, and others will be released next month. The music on the CD is protected with Creative Commons licenses, which allow (and even encourage) remixing, copying, and sampling of the songs. The Rip. Sample. Mash. Share. venture has caught the attention of free-culture advocates and industry execs alike. Gary Gersh, who runs label jointly with Universal Music Group, explained to the WSJ that file-sharing services provide new bands '"the potential to reach tens of millions more people" than they otherwise would.' Tomorrow (Tuesday, Sept. 21) Creative Commons is hosting this release party in NYC to celebrate.
