Face-off over the Facebook

TheFacebook.com became one of the most popular websites on the Harvard campus last winter, connecting students much like Friendster, Orkut, and other social networking programs. The website has expanded to 99 colleges with 284,000 users. But recently, the creator of the site, Mark Zuckerberg, has been locked in a legal battle with three other Harvard students who claim Zuckerberg stole their idea. A story in today's Boston Globe profiles the dispute. The Berkman Center's John Palfrey explains why the face-off has become so heated: "In virtually any category where people are making money on the Web, college students are a key target for marketing."
