iCommons in China

Clinical students Yuanshi Bu and Jinfei Zhang are assisting iCommons director Christiane Asschenfeldt and project leader Mao Xianghui to "port" Creative Commons licenses to China. Creative Commons licenses are used by authors who wish to make digital material freely available to the public on some basis. Copyright and neighboring rights may vary significantly from one nation to the other, however, therefore a literal translation into a foreign language will not necessarily accomplish the identical results. As an example, one Creative Commons license option allows authors to waive attribution to their work, but in France this "moral right" is neither waivable nor transferable. Bu and Zhang are researching Chinese copyright and contract laws and drafting versions of the CC licenses that will offer the most compatible terms possible.
