Palfrey on DMCA and Diebold; Crimson Reports Slater's Story

The Harvard Crimson ran an op-ed today written by Berkman Center Executive Director John Palfrey about the DMCA and how it has hit home at Harvard in the case against Berkman Affiliate Derek Slater. Earlier in the week, the Crimson reported on the decision in Slater's favor from the general counsel's office, acknowledging that Slater believed his posting of the Diebold documents was fair use, and so not a violation of copyright. In the op-ed, Palfrey writes, "Copyright is not meant to be used as a weapon to stifle political speech...[W]e ought to strive to educate our community not only about legal risks and responsibilities, but also about the defenses and the process for appeals."
