Job Opportunity: Junior Web Applications Developer

The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University is looking for a junior web developer responsible for the development and maintenance of custom web-based applications in PHP to join our team in Cambridge, MA.

We're looking for a developer who will thrive in a creative, fun, and fast-paced atmosphere with a team of extremely talented and dedicated developers and co-workers.  We love real time data, finding interesting ways to aggregate social networking statistics and have access to fascinating internet research data from all over the world.

The successful candidate will support a growing WordPress installation, develop web-based applications and build UIs.  The position will also create technical and end-user guide documents.  In concert with others, the web developer will interfaces with clients. The developer will need to keep current with tools and technologies of open source software. He or she will work as part of a team and support other developers on their projects.

The Berkman Center for Internet & Society is a research center founded to explore cyberspace, share in its study, and help pioneer its development. We represent a network of faculty, students, fellows, entrepreneurs, lawyers, and virtual architects working to identify and engage with the challenges and opportunities of cyberspace, and work with researchers, computer scientists, activists, librarians, musicians, and more from all corners of the university and beyond to advance cutting edge research.

Basic Qualifications

BS in computer science, engineering, or equivalent and at least 2+ years web application development experience.

Must have at least 1 year work experience with PHP.  Full life cycle development experience (technical design through implementation) required; experience with agile software development principles is highly desirable.

Additional Qualifications

Skills in Object-Oriented Design, Application Architecture and Web Technologies (HTML, JavaScript, CSS); good understanding of MVC Architecture; exposure to web services, JSON, web/REST and HTTP; understanding of web standards and best practices; knowledge of UNIX/Linux, Apache, shell scripting; excellent communication and technical skills; knowledge of relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL),  SQL, PHP frameworks (Symfony, CodeIgniter, CakePHP) and common PHP applications (WordPress, Mediawiki, Drupal) a plus; demonstrated ability to take appropriate initiative; ability to work independently and work as part of a team.
