[Virtual] Racial Health Disparities and the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 or novel coronavirus pandemic strikingly highlights the issue of racial health disparities. Authorities and the public seem perplexed by the fact that Blacks, Latinx, and Indigenous people are dying at higher rates than Whites. However, social scientists have long sounded the alarm to the fact that structural racism, interpersonal discrimination, lack of access to healthcare, and biases in clinical settings are extremely harmful to the health of minoritized populations. This discussion featuring Dr. Guadalupe Marquez-Velarde and Dr. Gabe Miller, and moderated by BKC fellow Apryl Williams focuses on the most important factors behind racial health disparities, and how they are influencing health and mortality outcomes in the age of COVID-19.
