Research Questions
- What are the 5 to 10 biggest non-profit companies in this field?
- How is the market distributed?
- Where are they located? Are there any incentives for specific locations?
- Correlate them with their main outputs (Data, Narratives, Tools)
- Understand and identify cases where these companies are “experimenting” or “adopting” commons-based approaches
- Identify these cases and treat them as entities that will also be placed in our mapping device (the quadrants)
- Identify what non-profits are the “Microsofts” of the field and what companies are the “IBMs” of the field. (Use the questionnaire to guide your research when appropriate - Carol will select specific relevant and helpful questions)
Domestic Non-profits
- "Curriki, a play on the words 'curriculum' and 'wiki', is a not-for-profit organization that is building the first and only Internet site for Open Source Curriculum (OSC), which will provide universal access to free curricula and instructional materials for grades K-12. We are focusing initially on developing an online repository for K-12 curricula in the areas of mathematics, science, technology, reading and language arts, and languages. We want this repository to attract everyone from educators, students and parents, to programmers, instructional designers, authors and public officials throughout the world to contribute or freely access quality learning materials." International Non-profits
- "Global Grid for Learning is a Cambridge University Press initiative to create a digital content supply network for education worldwide. The goal of the initiative is to connect one billion resources to education by 2018." The initiative is split into two entities globalgridforlearning.org and globalgridforlearning.com. The former is a supposed to be a free and open network of educational resources that any teacher can register for and access. The latter is a pay service that delivers professional, copyrighted educational resources to subscribers.
- "Pratham Books is a not-for-profit trust that seeks to publish high-quality books for children at a affordable cost in multiple Indian languages. Pratham Books is trying to create a shift in the paradigm for publishing children’s books in India. The low cost model proves that children’s literature can be attractive and affordable and therefore more accessible. Read India Books is an imprint of Pratham Books and is the first of several publishing brands that we hope to create. Over the next one year Pratham Books will publish an additional 100 children’s book titles under the Read India brand." ('About Us')
