PRIVACY IN CYBERSPACE

Discussion Questions

  • Do the benefits of the end-to-end design of the Internet outweigh the costs? The Internet was built with few architectural forces to enforce good behavior because there was a presumption of trust among those involved. With the ever-increasing flow of spam emails and viruses, does it still make sense to avoid centralized control mechanisms?
  • In what ways does the free software movement protect online privacy? Does it provide a feasible alternative to the market and consumerist models? How might the free software approach relate to the legislative or fundamental rights approaches? Are there reasons to avoid this sort of decentralized self-regulatory approach?
