The tragic death in Genoa today of a protestor has brought a pall over the
summit and the summit process.

The death of this single person, still unidentified, somehow brings me
personally to a new sense of the seriousness of the globalization debate,
and an awareness of how much the debate tends to lapse into circus--on all
sides. Lost in the glamour of summits and protests is how much the
outcomes--in the shape of global development--matter to people around the
world, especially the poor.
