iDVD is the copyrighted work that has a protection
measure.

Reverse the connection in your mind. Consider the 
the Apple DVD drive to be the dongle that permits 
iDVD to operate.  If you patch iDVD so that any
other drive can work with it (a skeleton key) then
you've circumvented the protection on access to iDVD.
