So what is it with hoverboards anyway? How will a hoverboard help you get from point A to point B? A hoverboard is essentially a self-contained personal transporter consisting of at least two motorized wheels attached to a set of electrically charged reusable pads situated on top of a frame. By leaning forward or backward, the rider controls the direction of movement by turning either the pads or the wheels, and speed of travel by turning the back bumper. Because the hoverboard is cushioned from the passenger's weight, they are very safe and easy to control and navigate through the crowds at major events like rock concerts.

Since the earliest prototype hoverboards have been used in organized sports as riding equipment, it is easy to see why they are quickly gaining in popularity as a means of transportation. Schools, organizations, and sporting events across the country have found the self-balancing scooters to be an effective way to transport students to and from events, while allowing them to participate in athletic competitions without any disruption to their daily schedules. The ease of use for even the youngest age group makes hoverboard competition very appealing to younger children, who may find it to be a much safer and fun alternative to riding a traditional bicycle. Self-balancing scooters can also be an ideal way for young people to get in shape, as they are extremely low-impact compared to many other forms of transportation.

Self-balancing hoverboards utilize two basic technologies to achieve flight: gyro-sticking and linear traction. Because the hoverboards employ a system of air-bags on all four wheels, they are able to absorb the shock of bumps, spills, or even collisions without losing total control. The two sensors located on the front of the hoverboard determine whether the rider is maintaining proper balance and control. The back sensors detect obstacles and allow the rider to easily avoid them, while both of these systems provide excellent safety.

In order to be as safe as possible when using self-propelled hoverboards, many riders wear specially designed, knee pads and elbow pads. Both of these pieces of safety gear are designed to keep the body of the rider cushioned and in the best possible position should the need arise. Hoverboards are known to cause quite a bit of friction, especially if they are being used in tight places, which is one of the reasons why these knee pads and elbow pads are worn in order to reduce the chances of injury. Hoverboards have a reputation for causing a lot of knee pain for long periods of time, but luckily these issues have begun to seem to lessen thanks to more extensive research and examinations into their cause and prevention.

Before purchasing a hoverboard, you should make sure that you research each piece individually to ensure that you are choosing the best product for your needs. Since each hoverboard is manufactured in different shapes and sizes, there are also several different brands that can be considered when buying one. Although some hoverboards may look identical on the outside, they do not all operate in the same way. Hoverboards that are two wheels are known as self-propelled, or self-balancing scooters, and these type of hoverboards are ideal for indoor activities. A three wheel hoverboard is known as a riding hoverboard, and these are great for outdoor activities as well.

Once you have decided what type of hoverboard you want, the next step in the process is to decide whether you would like a hoverboard that features a built in safety governor, or a throttle. Built in safety regulators to prevent the board from overheating and burning the rider's legs, which is very dangerous. Each type of hoverboards will feature a throttle option, which allows the rider to increase the speed of the board through pressing down on a trigger, or even pulling up on the handlebars. Each throttle has a different sensitivity, making it important to know which setting offers the best control.

One type of hoverboard that is currently being produced is called the lithium-ion. Hoverboards that are powered by lithium-ion batteries are much lighter weight than their electric counterparts, which makes them perfect for indoor riding. The downside to a lithium-ion hoverboard is that the battery must be replaced regularly; otherwise the rider will not be able to move as freely on the board. The good news is that lithium-ion hoverboards have recently been approved for use by the US Department of Transportation.

Hoverboards that use lithium-ion batteries will feature onboard sensors and electronic systems that detect your movements, as well as onboard sensors that detect any bumps, scrapes, or irregularities on the ground that are deemed safe enough to trigger the start of the motor. These onboard sensors will determine the direction that the hoverboard needs to turn, based on the position of each sensor. After the direction is determined, the board will either accelerate forward or slow down depending on its sensing system. Based on the angle and speed at which it chooses to travel, the hoverboard will either turn in the desired direction or stop and steer itself into a new path.
