Garthwaite, J., 2009d - The article discusses the formation of the U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center, which Steve Chu formed to work collaboratively on building energy efficiency, clean coal (including carbon capture and storage) and clean vehicles through an agreement with China. Each countries government is pledging $15 million to start the agreement. The collaborations are regarded as crucial to finding fast and easily shared solutions to climate change that can be shared with other developing and developed countries. Private companies are less concerned with this collaborative agreement due to the fact that it will emphasize government funded research and technologies that are usually subject to lower licensing fees. It does not endanger the private patents held by private companies.
