A cell form characterized by the presence of one or more [[flagella]], whip-like projections that are used primarily for locomotion. The flagellate protists are referred to as the [[Mastigophora]], though this is by no means a monophyletic group; in fact the first [[eukaryotes]] may have been flagellates. Flagellate cells also found in multicellular groups, especially among [[gametes]].
