= Organizational Domains:

Elements of open, common, interoperable architecture =

This outline is a work in progress towards the establishment of a modular design and implementation of a virtually free, rich, open source, database-driven multi-purpose networked information, communication and knowledge platform for any non-profit, community-based or indigenous organization.

Education for Sustainable Development & a Culture of Peace
A prototype implementation is under way for a ten year initiative of the NGO Committee on Education of CONGO - the Conference Of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations. Networks of inter-related web-sites are being developed in support of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010) and related overlapping Decades.

Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues
The design is also being offered to the NGO Committee on the World's Indigenous People as a draft collaborative framework in support of broad-based participation in the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues - established in July 2000 by the Economic and Social Council with a mandate to "discuss indigenous issues within the mandate of the Council relating to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights" .

Th framework incorporates a vision of an ongoing global indigenous forum to enable local, regional and global dialogue among aand between indigenous communities that would make use of increasingly affordable convergent media-rich digital technologies to support a diversity of modalities of dialogue and consultation on issues expressed in the Draft United Nations declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples and that arise during the Second International Decade of the World's Indigenous People (2005-2014).

Common functions and processes
The design is predicated on the observation of the existence of a common set of functions and processes of non-profit and community-based organizations - membership, meetings, newsletters, documents/reports, committees and sub-committees, projects, campaigns, events, forums, fund-raising, education, outreach, etc. - and the development of common protocols by which information is gathered and organized.

Modular / fractal
The modular design of the architecture means that each committee, project, campaign, etc. can have its own section of the site based on variations of a common template that has the same features as the site as a whole - e.g. each committee has space for membership. meetings, projects, events, etc. The imagery of variegated fractals may be applicable, in which common patterns are replicated in nested and connected ways.

Interactive / participatory
The domains are designed to be interactive and participatory, with a choice of options for registered participants to contribute: in a community blog, in wiki spaces, or through the use of easy-to-use forms - e.g. for posting information on upcoming events, news items, information of interest, web resources, books, etc.

Common data protocols
A key element of the design is the adoption of a common set of protocols for forms, form fields and scripts to provide for the most effective integration of information, and to enable ready sharing and exchange of information - e.g. integration of calendar-related information - within and between organizations - for example - and where applicable, to provide the ability to tap into common external bodies of knowledge.

Protocols & the Internet
It is protocols that define the Internet and enable the remarkable degree of interoperability and free exchange of information already supported by the Internet. The adoption of common data exchange protocols would represent a significant next phase in the Internet - Web 3.0? Among other things, this would be of significant value in the compilation of a rich public domain with common bodies of knowledge and public information - whether demographic, economic, geographic, hydrological, botanical, etc.

Registration form
For a registration page, for example, common protocols will be used for the names, format and sizes of the various contact information elements - with both country-specific and international protocols. Common names of states or provinces and cities, with applicable GIS information would be accessible for download and integrated as selectable form options and into an organization's database.

Books & ISBN numbers
Books provide a good example of drawing on existing information, and a form for sharing book recommendations would have a field for the book's ISBN number. Providing the ISBN number would activate a script for automatic retrieval of the bibliographic information and could also generate a link to the publisher's web site or to online book sellers.

Global agreements
References to United Nations documents, global agreements, conventions and treaties will be linked into a common hyperlinked body of such documents already under development at www.un-documents.net

Botanical information
Similarly, a plant identification form for a community garden web site - for which La Perla Garden in New York's Upper West Side will be serving as a prototype - will be linked into a botanical database that can either generate or create access to a web page - or set of web pages - with a wealth of information about the plant and its properties, uses, geographical distribution, place in the Linnaean system of classification and its relationship with other plants and species - e.g. milk weed and the Monarch butterfly - etc.

Web Application Toolkit
:Domain toolkit: The beginnings of an outline of software installations that can support this platform.
April 14, 2006 - Launch of The Wealth of Networks
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
540 W. 21st Street, New York, NY

Please join Yale Professor Yochai Benkler for the launch of his new book, "The Wealth of Networks". The book explains how a new form of distributed collaboration is transforming the world economy, heralded by innovations such as:

:# Open Source software like Linux and Apache that have surpassed commercial software made by huge corporations
:# A free, collaboratively authored encyclopedia called Wikipedia that rivals Encyclopedia Britannica, and
:# Volunteer research projects like NASA Clicks that are as accurate as the work of paid scientists.

Benkler does not see these projects as isolated examples, but rather as exemplars of an emerging mode of economic production. His book shows why labor done outside the constraints of free markets and giant corporations can still have a huge impact on the economy and social relations. He argues that a "third mode of production" offers the promise of a more free society, but only if we make the right collective decisions.

:The evening started at 6pm with wine, cheese, and informal conversation. At 7pm Jonah Peretti, Eyebeam's Director of R&D, introduced Benkler and gave a quick tour of important and emerging open source and collaborative projects. Then at 7:15pm, Benkler gave a brief talk presenting the core ideas of his new book.

The Wealth of Networks was available for purchase in the Eyebeam bookstore the night of the event and can also be ordered on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0300110561/103-6520487-9511867?v=glance&n=283155

The basic idea is to make this Wiki a place where people who read the book can do at least five things.

* First, collaborate on writing a summary of the ideas and claims of the book, as an initial point of entry.

:* Visit the Table of Contents and elaborate chapter summaries

* Second, collaborate on writing commentaries on the book and elaborating and refining its presentation

* Third, provide an easy platform through which to access underlying research materials:

:* both those used in the book's notes, and more importantly,

:* resources that are useful for further research, refinement, and updating.

* Fourth, the Wiki should be a place where participants can describe, link to, and analyze examples of the phenomena the book describes.

:* The purpose is not to “make the case” for the book or find “gotcha” counter examples.

:* What we are trying to do is provide a real research tool, annotated bibliography, and platform for collaborative learning.

:* Examples and counter-examples should be selected and described with that purpose in mind.

* Fifth, the Wiki is itself a learning platform about what is valuable in a learning platform.

:* Through separate pages devoted to ideas and experiments of what can be done with an online book to make it a learning platform, we hope to expand the range of uses to which this Wiki can be available.

:* Through creative, systematic and interactive uses of this wiki, we hope to enhance our individual and collective skills & experience in a wiki world
Key Concepts
One way of understanding this work, and particularly this chapter, is to realize that Benkler has put into print/html/xml/pdf the answer to the age-old question: What’s in it for me? “It” being the Internet and the information law and policy that it arguably requires to sustain itself and thrive.

Although Benkler often characterizes the nonmarket, nonproprietary (NMNP) models as determining what serves the greater good and what is most effective for the most people, he is actually proving that NMNP models provide more satisfactory answers to more people. This can be understood by re-characterizing each of Benkler’s four economic observations.

“First, the baseline conception that proprietary strategies are dominant in our information production system is overstated.”

The point can be reframed as: The answer to “what’s in it for me?” does not necessarily involve the corollary question of “what’s NOT in it for you?” Market-based, proprietary models (MBPMs) assume that the only way to answer the question and give an incentive to create is to take rights away from others through exclusivity by way of trademark, patent, and copyright protections. Benkler counters this assumption by pointing out the fact that education, the arts, the sciences, and theological and political discourses have thrived on the NMNP model. The incentive to create remains without the exclusivity of the MBPM. Our information production system is actually dominated by strategies that can figure out that what’s in it for you is different from what’s in it for me and can give us each what we desire.

“The second economic point is that these expansions of rights operate, as a practical matter, as a tax on nonproprietary models of production in favor of the proprietary models.”

One problem with the MBPM is that it only satisfactorily answers the “what’s in it for me” for the content owners and providers. For the non-owners or non-providers, the MBPM’s answer is: You get to see/hear the content on our terms. Therefore, if you wish to employ NMNP models that necessarily involve “property” of the content owners/providers, you must either pay the appropriate licensing fees or be prepared for costly litigation. The price for the end-user also increases because these fees or litigation costs are partially or completely passed through to them. In addition, the MBPM also costs the owners/providers in the form of attorney fees for prosecution, registration, and litigation. Everyone ends up paying more but the content owners/providers are the only ones who may end up making more.1 Again, this comes from the MBPM fear that what’s in it for you will involve less for me.

“The third economic observation is that the basic technologies of information processing, storage, and communication have made nonproprietary models more attractive and effective than was ever before possible.”

In other words, basic technologies have made social reciprocity, redistribution, and sharing possible on a larger scale. These technologies have turned the belief into a reality; that what’s in it for me can benefit you and what’s in it for you can also benefit me. For example, if I want to clean up trash by the Charles River but I will not do so unless 100 other people help me, I can post my desire on http://www.pledgebank.com and wait for others to sign up.2 In the networked information environment of the NMNP model, I can use a website like Pledgebank to achieve this goal and surpass it with little effort on my part. This is much more attractive and effective than the MBPM which relies on high initial capital investments that restrict freedom of action. Without the minimal effort required by the NMNP model, I may never have acted on my desire to clean up along Storrow Drive and neither would have my fellow pledgors. One reason for this is the recyclable nature of products in the technological NMNP atmosphere. One website can service many and be revised almost infinitely. In the MBPM, someone has to be able to say “it’s mine” and therefore the recyclability is hindered or nonexistent.

“The fourth and final economic observation describes and analyzes the rise of peer production. This cluster of phenomena, from free and open-source software to Wikipedia and SETI@Home, presents a stark challenge to conventional thinking about the economics of information production.”

Peer production changes the question from what’s in it for me to the better question: "What’s in it for us?" The NMNP model allows a more expansive and inclusive “we.” Technology has removed the high capital investment costs and allowed this expansion of “producers.” Wikipedia and its kin prove that we can create useful information and better society and each other without the exclusivity that drives the MBPM. All that it takes is a realization of the two concepts ripe within this work:

What’s in it for me does not necessarily involve the corollary question of what’s NOT in it for you, and

The ultimate goal is to become part of the “we,” asking and answering the better question of “What’s in it for us?”

Peer production changes the question from what’s in it for me to the better question: "What’s in it for us?" == April 14, 2006 - Launch of The Wealth of Networks ==

The Wealth of Networks was available for purchase in the Eyebeam bookstore the night of the event and can also be ordered on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0300110561/103-6520487-9511867?v=glance&n=283155
that raged across the Atlantic, wreaking havoc on the buildings and crops. As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job,
he received a steady stream of refusals. Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer. "Are you a

amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in the barn, the chickens

: Probably in a page that doesn't yet exist titled Bibliography - or Annotated Bibliogrpahy, into which would eventually need to be gathered all the bibliographic references from the Notes in The Wealth of Networks, suitably organized and with space for comments.
