The Berkman Center for Internet & Society is very pleased to offer the iLaw 2011 Program, which will take place Tuesday, September 6th - Friday, September 9th. This wiki will serve as a repository for information and materials related to iLaw 2011. Here, you will find the iLaw Program Schedule, information about individual program sessions, required and recommended reading assignments, final student projects, and Program Logistics.

iLaw 2011 will be video recorded. All audience members, presenters, and other participants are required to sign a consent and release form (per the University's policy) prior to attending iLaw 2011. For more information, please visit Audio and Video Waivers. If you do not wish to be recorded please email us at ilaw@cyber.law.harvard.edu.

Please note that iLaw 2011 is a Harvard Law School class that is closed to the public. We received an enormous amount of interest in this year's program. For this reason, we ask that all registered participants commit to attending all sessions on all days -- the evening events, however, are optional.

Apart from the Evening Events, all program sessions will take place in the "Austin North" room of Austin Hall.
iLaw 2011 features a mixture of interactive lectures, roundtable-style and moderated discussions led by Harvard Law School faculty members, Berkman Center researchers, fellows, and special guests. Three types of substantive topical areas will be covered: (1) "Thematic Pillars" (the foundational topics and theories of iLaw), (2) "Cross-sectional Themes" (which explore overlapping themes below the foundational surface), and (3) Case Studies (cases and examples of themes in practice). Below are links to pages on this wiki categorized by topical area. These pages contain session overviews and links to the required reading assignments, recommended readings, and related Cross-sectional and Case Study sessions.

Note to HLS students: We’ve included a rather large number of readings on the wiki for each session. Although some of the session readings are described as “required,” faculty members and session leaders do not wish these assignments to be onerous. To this end, students will not be expected to have closely read all of the required materials prior to each session; however, students should at least familiarize themselves with the concepts contained therein. Additional “recommended” readings are included for those who wish to do a deeper dive into a particular topic area; we also hope these materials will also be useful for future research and student assignments.

Each day will end with an optional evening event. These events will offer unique opportunities to interact with Berkman Center and Harvard faculty, staff, fellows, and members of the community. Students and audience members are strongly encouraged to attend these events and learn more about the Berkman Center and it's diverse, enthusiastic community.
The event features recent hacks by the members of metaLAB and a special collaboration with Cambridge techno-musicologist Wayne Marshall. The evening will set the stage for the Digital Humanities pillar on Thursday morning.

A selection of activities led by Berkman Directors, fellows and other interested community members. iLaw attendees are also welcome to organize Food For Thought dinners in the area. See below for details on how to organize.

Poker with Charlie Nesson
Food for Thought Dinners
These dinners allow conference attendees to engage in self-organized informal, themed conversation with other conference participants. Since these dinners are self-organized, there is no limit to the number of dinners that can occur on Thursday evening. We have not yet made reservations for dinners at restaurants; so if any conference attendees are looking to initiate/host a dinner, you are responsible for organizing and making reservations and communications. Also, please note that dinner attendees are expected to pay their own dinner costs.

You may organize and sign-up for Food For Thought dinners on the the discussion page. All iLaw attendees are welcome to add their ideas for interesting topics or propose dinner locations. If you would like to feature a dinner topic on this page for others to see, please email ilaw@cyber.law.harvard.edu.

Food For Thought dinners tend to work best when the group size is small enough to be intimate (around 8 people or so). For restaurants in Harvard Square, expect approximately a 10-minute walk from Austin. For restaurants in Porter Square, expect approximately a 15 to 20-minute walk from Austin.
Overview
Thursday, 3:30-4:30pm<br/>
Format: Introductory Lecture and Moderated Discussion<br/>
Lead: Yochai Benkler<br>
Participants: Aaron Shaw, Benjamin Mako Hill, Mayo Fuster Morell

This session will center on the ways in which new technologies harness and fuel new forms of cooperation by lowering costs and enabling collaboration that can be transformative for business, government, and society at large. Yochai Benkler will lead a discussion on emerging cooperative models and their impact on business processes, smarter technology, economic reform, volunteer contributions to research, and other benefits. This session will engage several Berkman Fellows who are conducting observational and experimental research on the underlying social, psychological, and evolutionary mechanisms that affect cooperation, collaboration, dispute resolution, trust, and social and economic exchange. Wikipedia will provide an example through which to gain a deeper sense of the breadth and depth of the phenomenon of online cooperation, as well as illuminating the offline cooperation which forms the foundation of our societies.

Driving Questions
* How do we systematize cooperative human systems design, now that we all know that online collaboration is a critical component of the networked information economy?
* How do we integrate power into our understanding of networked society? What are the limits of public action, and what are the limits of decentralized action, given power in the market, the state, real-world society and the network?

I study political and economic dimensions of collective action online. My current projects address the effects of power inequalities in information sharing communities; the relationship between online participation and political engagement; and the dynamics of participation in commercial crowdsourcing markets and non-commercial peer production projects.
Some of my previous research has compared participatory infrastructure of the right and left of the U.S. political blogosphere; investigated the origins of Free Software policies in Brazil; and analyzed applications of crowdsourcing for both social scientific research and humanitarian crisis relief.
