Affiliates Nathan Sanders and Bruce Schneier remark on the Department of Defense's transition from Anthropic to OpenAI technologies given the former's refusal to allow its models to be used for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weaponry. Sanders and Schneier note Anthropic's decision as a strategic one, allowing it to position itself as "the moral and trustworthy AI provider."
In The Guardian, they write: "The Pentagon should maximize its warfighting capabilities, subject to the law. And private companies like Anthropic should posture to gain consumer and buyer confidence. But we should not rest on our laurels, thinking that either is doing so in the public’s interest."
