Signal/Noise 2k5: Creative Revolution?

The following is an archived page. The complete Signal or Noise II conference website can be found at http://cyber.harvard.edu/sn/

The Signal or Noise II conference will be held in Ames Courtroom, Austin Hall on the Harvard Law School campus on April 8, 2005.  It is co-hosted by The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School, the Harvard Journal of Law and Technology, the Harvard Committee on Sports and Entertainment Law, and Gartner G2.

The conference will revolve around 3 themes:

   1. Is all art derivative?  Is the borrowing that goes on now in an old tradition or is it somehow different?  Is the distinction between new and derivative meaningful?

   2. New Technologies are enabling new genres, creators and business models--but are simultaneously challenging traditional ones.  What are the changes and responses, and will our shared culture benefit overall?

   3. Artists have a spectrum of reactions to downstream uses of their work.  Reactions vary according to the type and purpose of the reuse, e.g., commercial or fandom; private or public; political or entertainment.  What drives these reactions and how should society balance artists' rights and interests with the public's?

Following the day's discussion, there will be optional, "dutch" Food For Thought dinners to allow the conference participants and attendees to meet and discuss issues that arose during the day.  Click here for more information.
