Considering that parts of 4Chan turn out trolls like the factory in the Star Wars movie it would be easy to make jokes about this being a good thing.  But if we take it seriously, the comments are enlightening:

àIt isn’t the ad-blockers, it’s your choice of ads that necessitate them!

à    ^^^ this ^^^

à    I don’t run with an ad-blocker. Instead, I just run from any site that is abusive with their ads.

àAdvertisers like many others saw the Internet as a new frontier and as an opportunity to push people’s expectations of what ads could be (for the worse). When adblockers arrived they saw the threat and tried to get everyone to drink the “ads are necessary” kool-aid, even shaming people for using adblockers and accusing them of stealing. Pretty audacious when you consider the harm done by malicious ads over the years. Ads may be necessary, but it’s not necessary that they intrude into our lives to this extent. At this point we’re not too far away from the RESUME VIEWING scenario in Black Mirror.

àThese sites have got to learn to provide non-intrusive ads. Also, natively hosting them would prevent the ad-blockers from screening them out. I block ads because they slow down the loading process and I hate waiting on all the ad sites to load. I block all the ad sites across the board from my GC so I don’t have to run ad blockers in the web browser. It even makes google run faster when you block all the adwords. Plus it cleans out all those highlighted words that you accidentally mouse-over and they open those stupid boxes that block what you are reading.

àIf the website actually hosted the ad, then the ad blocker wouldn’t filter it out. The ad blockers block ads from the ad hosting companies that don’t match the host of the site content. There are lots of ways to do advertising right. Look at BMW and “The Hire” series. It draws you in and you watch the giant ad because it was well done.

àAnnoying ads are obsolete, we don’t pay attention to them. They are useless and a waste of money. Ads can be done better, and ironically lots of “articles” now are just ads in disguise. So these pop ups, mouse overs, etc and all pointless and everyone KNOWS they are pointless but they persist because they give the false sense of value to the people who buy them.

There are lots more good there and Gizmodo's readers are perhaps a bit more tech-savvy so they probably don't represent the average Internet user.  But then, neither does the membership of *this* email list.  ;-)

Kind regards,
