Don first explained CHEDDAR here: <http://blog.aloodo.org/posts/new-acronym/>.

Brian,
Cheddar is the technical framework that Don Marti worked up and shared with us at VRM day in April.

It's meant to allow non-stalking, not tracking based ads through, while barring other ads including those based upon tracking, buying and selling of data etc.

Read Doc's post here on the overall topic and Cheddar in particular.

Don,
Not sure if Cheddar has it's own site now to describe the framework.

Mary,

I'm not familiar with Cheddar.

I'm not sure how no stalking encompasses buying and selling of data.

With Clearware, I had icons to depict collecting of personal information and collecting of non-personal information.  I had another icon to respect that information was shared.

I was trying to use non biased language to depict common terms fond in EULAs.

Brian,
No stalking vs. No tracking can be changed in the language, sure. One reason we liked No Stalking is that it encompasses more than just tracking: the buying and selling of data in addition to direct tracking, the use of malware, etc.

Cheddar, as the technical framing for this, covers more than direct tracking and so as a name for the button and the selection, No Stalking attempts to map along with Cheddar.

What do you think about this?

I think "no stalking" is fine as it could be done without ads.  Perhaps even soften the language to "no tracking"?

Hi Tim,
You're right.. we asked for "no stalking" not "no ads that reflect stalking or surveillance."

We can go back and ask for tuning, and also suggest that variant.

Do you (and others) think we should ask for that change? or ask for iterations that reflect the additional understanding?

I read the design brief, and I have to say, none of them strike me as intuitively indicating "I'll accept non-surveillance ads.”

Well, some of them don’t *not* say it.

#1260584, from jellareed, comes closest, in my view, but still doesn't quite capture it. How about the old Mad Magazine Spy vs. Spy character, holding a big magnifying glass, with an anvil about to fall on his head? ;-)

To me that one looks like a football with a “no placemarker” (or something) symbol on it.

While I like the magnifying glass element, I think it’s a bit too big and non-simple. But I can be swayed, maybe.

I like the bar through the eye. It says “no eye,” as in “no spying.” Or could. The barred eye in the rectangle (meaning screen, like on a computer or a phone) in #1258971 makes sense to me. Larger format: http://www.hatchwise.com/entry-for-973133-1258971-6939.

I get that they’re using green because that’s a Customer Commons symbol color. (Or at least I think that’s why they’re using it.) But green also means “go." Wonder how the one above would look with red substituted for green?

More thoughts?
