The site If This Then That (ifttt.com) has had this capability for a while--hit a particular geo-location and Nest goes on, garage doors open, SMS sent to person who needs to know. Or if weather does something, text arrives. Or if sports scores, USB lights up, calendar entries made, whatever. A lot of the recipes are based on interacting with Google because it's so popular.

In IOT + MyWave = Ambient Harmony, James Ladd outlines an intriguing approach to VRM and one's things. His bottom lines:

Imagine you are on your way home from work and as you near your house your car triggers an ‘arrival’ event. Your garage door opens automatically and the lights and heater turn on in your house. These scenarios and more are possible today.

I can see a world where IOT devices are shipped with a MyWave extension that defines the events and rules needed to integrate it into our lives according to our preferences stored in our Personal Clouds. For more information or to talk further about this please send me an email or visit MyWave.

James and other MyWave folks are on the list, so feel free to talk about it here too.
