I've had the pleasure to meet the European privacy leaders Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin and Giovanni Buttarelli separately over the past few weeks. They speak of "Dignity" as core to the principles by which institutions and their computing machines treat humans and our data.

Great piece, thanks.

Along these lines, the book How Adam Smith Can Cha ge Your Life is a great read:

It turns out Adam Smith's book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments was dearer to his heart and closer to his overarching economic and social vision than The Wealth of Nations. A great deal of TMS focuses on "the economics of regard" which center on social ideas of status and etiquette. He also posits that by being kind to others we are "more lovely and more lovable" and increase our social standing.
Fascinating article!

Along the same lines... Mary Shelly touched on this in Frankenstein:

"I learned that the possessions most esteemed by your fellow creatures were high and unsullied descent united with riches. A man might be respected with only one of these advantages, but without either he was considered, except in very rare instances, as a vagabond and a slave, doomed to waste his powers for the profits of the chosen few!"
