It turns out Adam Smith's book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments was dearer to his heart and closer to his overarching economic and social vision than The Wealth of Nations. A great deal of TMS focuses on "the economics of regard" which center on social ideas of status and etiquette. He also posits that by being kind to others we are "more lovely and more lovable" and increase our social standing.
