We’re talking could-be-anything.

I don’t think we need to toss all of email out with the bad-acting and bad-usage bathwater. Email is based on open, understood and widely used protocols. These have huge value.

I believe it’s possible to near-zero-base new email aproaches, using some existing protocols and well-understood norms, but with ambitions toward what we as VRooMers would like.

Seems to me that’s what Mailpile is trying to do. Looks interesting. Anybody here involved? Or know anybody involved?

What would be leading contenders to replace email? Just to make sure I got my lingo right, we're talking protocol, not apps, right?

What is the general sentiment on this list about the state of email? Are we hopeful or cynical?

To quote my colleague from the okTurtles Foundation, lead developer of  EmpressMail and Espionage, Greg Slepak:

"I am seriously starting to think that maybe the best thing to do with email might be to just get rid of it."

That about sums up my feelings on the matter, too.
