Apple has fired the first shot on the stronger technology side: neither the corporation nor the FBI can get to your data and whatever data sharing does happen is pairwise pseudonymous by design. The recently finalized FIDO Alliance specs
http://fidoalliance.org/ are another example of strong technology based on pairwise pseudonymity and private keys only you have.
Stronger technology and better laws are not mutually exclusive. But, given the quality of our politics these days we could easily have "stronger technology and worse laws".
